Anyone who comes to the Okanagan Valley on vacation has to go to Quails Gate Winery. It is one of the more well known wineries in the Okanagan. The winery was established in 1989 and the main wine shop that now stands on the property opened in 2007. Located in West Kelowna, the winery boasts some of the best views of the valley. The winery has up to a thousand tastings per day, which can be booked on their website.
The wine shop, where the tastings take place, has a tall counter- 44 inches and their accessible counter is 36 inches(ideal for people using manual and power chairs, or walkers) The wine shop is very large and easy to maneuver
I was very impressed with their restaurant, called ‘The Old Vines’, has a very nice and spacious patio for outside dining and enjoying the view….and wine. Getting down to the restaurant you have to use a ramp located inside the restaurant
If you require something to hold onto the restaurant’s ramp has railings that are 36 inches off the ground. Once on the patio, the tables are spread apart enough to make maneuvering around them easier than most restaurants. The outside tables are pedestal style, so there is room for your legs underneath, someone using a manual or a power chair may have to position their chair sideways.
One issue I noted on the property is the bathroom doors in the wine shop. They are quite heavy, but once you get in, the bathroom itself is very open and spacious. with an accessible counter and sink.
If you’re in need of a raised toilet , this may not be the best of bathrooms as the toilet height is only 17 inches.
The ramp from the parking lot to the wine shop is a lower grade, longer ramp.
The ground between the vines is smooth and easy to navigate.
In between some of the vines, they have small sitting areas that can accommodate power and manual wheelchairs. The seats provided might prove challenging for anyone with hip/knees issues as the padding on the bench-style seats tend to slide and the seats themselves are not anchored to the ground so pushing off from them could be tricky.
Quail’s Gate has several different types of tours available, and unfortunately, not all parts of the winery are accessible on the tours. For example, the wine library, which houses the vineyards classic collection and features a small seating overlooking a very cool looking storage space, is located up and flight of steep stairs and has no elevator access. However, the part of the tours that show you the main storage vats and bottling area is wide open and easy to manage from a chair.
